Understanding Dynamics GP Sunsetting
Learning that Dynamics GP is sunsetting can be overwhelming, but STAaR Co. is here to help. Explore our answers to the most frequently asked questions below.
Microsoft is channeling its innovation and investment into cloud solutions and technologies with AI capabilities and enhanced security.
Mainstream support means Microsoft will continue to enhance the product, provide regulatory and tax updates (in the supported jurisdictions), and provide technical support at the standard support rates. The end of mainstream support is Dec 31, 2029
If you are using Dynamics GP Payroll and rely on annual payroll updates, that means you will receive the final update by the end of 2029, so payroll users should pay extra attention to this date. For Dynamics GP users not using payroll, you may be able to continue after this date with limited interruption but you will not be able to reach out to Microsoft after this date and if there is a bug in the software that’s not resolved by then, it won’t be resolved.
Extended Support means that Microsoft will continue to provide security updates and extended support until the end of April 2031. Security updates will be bug fixes related only to security threats, so it does not cover most bugs nor does it include tax updates. To participate in extended support, you typically have to purchase an add-on support agreement from Microsoft, otherwise, you are not able to raise support tickets with them. If you are looking for Microsoft support after Sep 2029, your best course of action is to submit the ticket to STAaR for the help you need.
Microsoft has more information on this lifecycle policy and the difference between mainstream and extended support here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/policies/fixed
Yes. Microsoft will continue publishing security updates until that time.
For clients on the current version of Dynamics GP (currently v18.6), Microsoft does not expect to create additional security updates beyond April 30, 2031.
For clients on a legacy version of Dynamics GP covered by the Fixed Lifecycle Policy (GP 2018 R2 or earlier), support ends on the dates published on the Microsoft lifecycle website (see https://microsoft.com/lifecycle), which are sooner than April 30, 2031.
In either case, current policy permits clients with an active Service Plan (e.g., AP) to download previously released security updates for their version of Dynamics GP, even if such download occurs after the applicable end of support date(s) for that version. Policies are subject to change.
Currently clients with an active Service Plan (e.g., AP) may purchase additional user licenses for their existing system, even if such purchase occurs after the applicable end of support date(s). Policies are subject to change.
Currently clients may renew their Service Plans (e.g., EP, AP, Advantage Plans) beyond their end of support date(s), however, product support benefits including upgrades and incident support are not provided by such plans beyond end of support dates as described in the first question of these FAQs. See Microsoft Services and Support Policy Guide (PSBC log-in required) for which benefits are available before and after end of support dates. Policies are subject to change.
Extended Security Updates or ESUs (which provide critical security updates beyond end of support) are not expected to be offered for Dynamics GP products.
